Hash Generator

Get SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of text or a file. Computed in your browser.

MD5 is not offered. It is broken for security use and the browser's Web Crypto API does not include it.

How the hashes are made

Your text is converted to UTF-8 bytes and passed to crypto.subtle.digest for each algorithm. The raw digest is shown as hexadecimal, 2 characters per byte: 40 for SHA-1, 64 for SHA-256, 96 for SHA-384 and 128 for SHA-512.

The same input always gives the same hash, and any small change gives a completely different one. A hash cannot be reversed to recover the input.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hash algorithms are supported?
SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512, computed with the browser's Web Crypto API. MD5 is not offered.
Why is there no MD5?
MD5 is broken for security use because collisions are easy to create, and Web Crypto does not include it. Use SHA-256 or newer for checksums and integrity checks.
Can I hash a file?
Yes. Choose a file and all four hashes are computed from its bytes. The file is read in your browser and is never uploaded. Very large files depend on your device memory.
Is SHA-1 still safe?
Not for security. SHA-1 collisions have been demonstrated. It is fine for non-security checks such as matching a legacy checksum.
Can I use this to store passwords?
No. Plain SHA hashes are too fast to resist guessing. Use a slow password hash such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 on your server.
